THERE were no babies welcomed into 2016 at the Alexandra Hospital this New Year but Worcestershire Royal welcomed eight bouncing bundles of joy on January 1.
The pink bunting outweighed the blue almost two-to-one with three boys and five girls born between midnight on December 31 and 9am on New Year’s Day.
The celebrations come after the Alex’s maternity unit closed on November 5 – meaning expectant mothers now have to travel to Birmingham or Worcester to give birth after the announcement that there is not enough staff at the Alex to operate the unit safely.
Rachel Carter, maternity matron, said: “All babies are special but it is extra special to have them at Christmas and New Year and all the midwives enjoy working on these dates.
“There is a bit of friendly competition this year between the main suite and the new Meadow Birth Centre and this year the main suite welcomed the first baby of the New Year.”
