Diary of your MP from Karen Lumley, MP for Redditch County – 1 January 2016
AT THIS time of the year the temptation is irresistible to look back and see where we were this time year.
At the beginning of 2015 we were looking forward to what was looking to be one of the most interesting General Elections in a generation. A hung Parliament seemed likely. The Greens looked to be making ground, while Ukip were hoping to sweep the board and the Lib Dems were set for possible wipe-out. As for Scotland, the stage was set for a Labour annihilation by the Nationalists.
Well, some of this turned out to be true, but no poll predicted the Conservatives would attain the overall majority they did. I believe David Cameron’s arguments that we had to be given a chance over the economy and to negotiate over EU membership won the day.
For sure, the whole EU question is the biggest to be resolved during this Parliament. The EU is heading in a direction we never signed up to – it’s too big, too bossy and too interfering. The EU is not working for Britain, and it must change.
That is why the Prime Minister is renegotiating a better deal for Britain so we stay in a reformed European Union. The Government wants to see a new settlement – one that will make Europe a more dynamic continent to ensure it delivers prosperity and security for all within it.
The Government has already shown change is possible, having vetoed an EU fiscal treaty which didn’t guarantee a level playing field for British businesses.
I do hope you all enjoyed a peaceful Christmas, and I wish everyone health and prosperity for the New Year.
