Head keeps his promise as pupils smash their food bank target

THE school year ended on a high at Woodrow First School when what looked like a safe bet by headteacher Richard Kieran backfired in spectacular fashion – with him being covered in gunk by delighted pupils.

In recent times the Year 4 youngsters have taken part in a social action project, like supporting Redditch Nightstop, and for 2020-21 pupils had tackled the issue of hunger and the work of food banks.

“I said to the children they could bring in more than 100kg of food donations for the food bank, then they could cover me in gunk,” said the sporting head.

“It was just the incentive they needed,” said Year 4 teacher Louise Allmark.

“Not only did they break their 100kg target but they managed to donate an amazing 485kg of food for the food bank.

“Not only that but they then organised a raffle which raised an incredible £641.85 for the food bank too.

“They were fantastic and we’d like to thank everyone who contributed and the wider community for all their help and support.”

And so it was that last week on the playground, under blazing sunshine, the school gathered to celebrate the end of term and to watch the dunking of Mr Kieran, who had mysteriously disappeared.

Eventually he came out, to the delight of the children, wearing goggles, a long anorak and wellies, all of which were eventually prised off him reading for the grand event.

After a good soaking, topped with a sprinkling of glitter to mark Woodrow’s 50th birthday, the sporting head said: “It was the very least I could do given just how fantastically well the children have done.

“Full credit to them, the staff, and the wider Woodrow family.

“Considering what they have achieved, getting covered in gunk was a small, albeit wet, price to pay.”
