Help beat prostate cancer: Redditch Lions hold testing day for men over 50

Redditch Editorial 1st Oct, 2019   0

DON’T put your head in the sand – get tested for prostate cancer!

That’s the message to men in the Redditch area from the local Lions club.

And this Saturday, October 5, they’re holding a special PSA testing day – absolutely free of charge – at Redditch Town Hall for men aged over 50.

There is no need to book.

The PSA test is a blood test that can help diagnose prostate problems, including prostate cancer.

A raised PSA level may suggest a problem with your prostate, but not necessarily cancer.

A consultant urologist will be available to answer any questions visitors may have.

On average one in eight men will develop prostate cancer with the ratio even higher – up to one in four – for black men, although researchers at Prostate Cancer UK say they still don’t know why that is, although it could be down to genetics.

Age also is a factor, with prostate cancer mainly seen in men aged 65 to 69 although the simple PSA test can possibly detect the signs at an earlier age.

A family history of prostate cancer can also be a factor.

The event at the Town Hall runs from 10am to 2pm and is organised by Redditch Lions Club and funded by West Midlands Angling Clubs, Associations and Fisheries.
