Help plea on the sober past of Studley Total Abstinence Society

THE hunt is on to find out more about the ‘Studley Total Abstinence Society’, formed by the Reverend Stubbs in 1880.

In December 1880, temperance officially came to Studley and the society was set up, however little is known about it and anyone who has information is urged to come forward.

Studley has long been known as the village with more pubs than anywhere else in England.

It is thought that plans were laid for the formation of a Band of Hope and a Blue Ribbon Mission in either the Wesleyan or National School room.

A Facebook post for Studley Heritage read: “Can you tell us more? Were your ancestors members? How long did the Society last? Are there any bits of memorabilia out there – photos of associated events or parades, pamphlets, or badges perhaps?

“Anyone with any memorabilia relating to this can get in touch via email to [email protected].”
