Help us grow! Chrysanthemum Society appeal as annual show dawns

Redditch Editorial 4th Nov, 2019   0

A GROUP dedicated to growing beautiful blooms of chrysanthemums is gearing up for its autumn show – and also appealing for new members.

In fact spokesman John Rogers from Headless Cross in Redditch said they came close to deciding not to put on the show at all because of a fall in numbers.

“We’ve been hit by a right bout of illness of late and couple that is a fall in numbers that we did have our doubts but the show will go ahead as planned,” said John.

John’s a member of the Shirley Chrysanthemum Society which long ago outgrew its roots and has spread right across the north Worcestershire and south Birmingham.

And its pull goes even further, with judges Keith Smith and John Powell travelling up on the day from Herefordshire to choose the winners.

The show itself is at Burcot Garden Centre between Bromsgrove and Redditch on Thursday, November 7 and some stunning displays are promised, fingers crossed, said John.

“This year’s show will definitely be better than last year’s, which was far too dry,” he said.

“This season looks like it is going to be a little bit better, we’ve had a bit of late sunshine but with all these things, it all depends on Mother Nature.”

Everyone is welcome to go along and admire the blooms at the garden centre which is on the Alcester Road in Burcot.

Anyone interested in trying their hand at growing chrysanthemums or in joining the society can contact John on 01527 544220.
