'Heritage Corridor' will unlock Worcestershire's hidden treasures

Redditch Editorial 5th Apr, 2020   0

A CASH grant of up to £10,000 has been made to create a ‘Heritage Corridor’ across north Worcestershire.

Stretching from Redditch, the ‘Corridor’ will include Tardebigge Canal Locks, the Lickey Incline and the Roman Saltway to and from Droitwich with the aim of telling the story of this historic and picturesque section of the English landscape.

As well as encouraging visitors from further afield, it is hoped the initiative will inspire local people to explore and appreciate what is on their doorstep.

The grant is part of the £81,000 Cultural Capacity Fund launched by the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) and the Corrdior was one of nine successful bids.

Others include a Home of Metal visitor attraction in Birmingham, a Cultural Hub at Castle Bromwich Hall and Gardens and Roaming Routes across north Birmingham.

Anita Bhalla, board director for creative and culture, GBSLEP, said: “The cultural economies of our regional towns and centres play a vital part in supporting our local economy, enhancing quality of life, encouraging inward investment and creating community focal points that engender a strong sense of place.

“It is recognised there has been significant underinvestment of public funding in this sector over recent decades.

“We received over 30 applications for the nine places on this round of the fund which demonstrates just how urgently cultural organisations require funding to enable these and other fantastic projects.”

Councillor Matt Dormer, Leader of Redditch Borough Council, added: “Redditch has lots of heritage gems in its crown with Forge Mill being one of them and I am delighted this successful bid will mean we can unlock even more of our borough’s treasures for everyone to enjoy.”

Redditch already has a number of partners who were involved in putting the bid together and a borough council spokesperson said: “As well as encouraging visitors from further afield, this intervention will support usage of the countryside by local people.

“All prospective partners envisage clear long-term benefits to the local economy, encouraging people to stay and make careers in the area, as well as enhancing the standard of living of those who move here in future.”
