Hilda honours late husband John Watts at Alcester street naming ceremony

ALCESTER community members gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of John Watts, a beloved Alcester resident, as a new road was officially named in his honour.

The ceremony was especially poignant for Hilda Watts, 88, who attended to honour her late husband John.

Hilda was joined by her daughters Sue, Sheila, and Patricia. The event, part of the Alcester Park Southern phase with Bloor Homes, marked a deeply emotional and proud moment for the Watts family.

Sheila reflected on her father’s remarkable contributions to the town.

She said: “Our dad moved to Alcester with Hilda in 1961 and quickly became involved in many community projects.

“He created the Heart of England Way, a 100-mile walk through the Midlands, which continues to inspire walkers today.”

John Watts was widely respected as a passionate walker and conservationist.

“He played an active role in numerous local clubs and served as chairman of the Alcester Civic Society,” Sheila added.

“His dedication to preserving and promoting the countryside was recognised in 2005 when he was made Honorary Life President of the Heart of England Way Association.

“He also created the shorter Arden Way, which links Alcester and Henley, further cementing his legacy in the region.

For Hilda, seeing her husband’s name commemorated in the town they made their home was a moment of immense pride.

She and her daughters expressed how much it meant to them all to see John’s lifelong commitment to Alcester and the countryside honoured in such a lasting way.

The family described the occasion as a proud and unforgettable milestone that will remain close to their hearts.

The ceremony not only celebrated John’s achievements but also highlighted the enduring impact of his vision, ensuring that future generations will continue to walk the paths he created and remember the man who made them possible.
