History society to host talk on early postcards of Redditch town centre

THE LATEST talk in Redditch History Society’s annual programme takes place this Monday, October 13, and focuses on postcards from the town’s past.

‘Early Postcards of Redditch Town Centre’ includes early images of Alcester Street – particularly the Palace Theatre – and St Stephen’s Church and the Church Green.

There will also be images of roads and areas of the town centre which no longer exist.

The presentation will be given by society member Chris Jackson.

Chris, a philatelist, as well as a postal and local historian, will be drawing from his own archives to take us on this virtual journey, which follows on from his previous talks which concentrated on outlying areas of Redditch.

The talk will no doubt bring back many ‘pre- New Town’ memories as well as showing newer residents how the town of Redditch has evolved and dramatically changed over the last century or so.

This promises to be another memorable afternoon of social and local history, not to be missed.

The society meets from 2pm to 4pm on the second Monday of every month.

Non-members are always welcome for a £4 admission fee and refreshments are available after the talk for just 50p per person.

The meeting next month – on November 10  – will feature a talk delivered by Richard Churchley on Needlemaking in Worcestershire and Warwickshire, from 1640 until 1940.
