HoW invests in Redditch campus to boost special education needs learning

HEART of Worcestershire College is leading the way for Special Education Needs (SEN) provision across Worcestershire, as they prepare to unveil new state-of-the art facilities thanks to a partnership with the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

The refurbishment and development of new facilities comes as the college received £298,000 investment from the Worcestershire LEP through the Government’s Growth Deal, as part of a joint partnership project between the two organisations.

The project will fundamentally transform how local post 16 specialist provision can be shaped to best meet the needs and preferences of young people and their parents at this important transition to adulthood.

Due to be completed at the end of March, the project will transform campus facilities at the college’s Worcester and Redditch sites with a series of developments to deliver specialist facilities at the college to benefit those learners with special educational needs.

Facilities will include a sensory room, a mocked up ‘flat’ to be used to support learners to develop independence skills, refurbished classroom areas and improved access to online facilities which support independent learning, in preparation for employment or living independently.

Once completed, these specialist base areas will provide outstanding resources to learners with high needs and will offer the specialist facilities needed within the heart of the college to support its values of inclusivity.

Spokeswoman Claire Heywood said: “Here at Heart of Worcestershire College we’re absolutely delighted to be able to transform our existing surroundings to accommodate these new facilities. The College is passionate about enhancing SEN provision and continuing to support our current and future cohort of learners. I’d particularly like to thank the Worcestershire LEP for providing us with a significant investment to make this project possible.”

Gary Woodman, chief executive of Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “Worcestershire LEP has invested funds from the Government’s Growth Deal into the new refurbishment of Heart of Worcestershire College’s Skills Base Centres, to help provide specialist equipment for young people with special educational needs. With these new state of the art facilities, Heart of Worcestershire College will be able to provide relevant and sustainable life skills for a greater number of students.”
