REDDITCH MP Rachel Maclean has thrown her weight behind Prime Minister Theresa May as she faces a vote of no confidence from her own party.
“Now is not the time for a leadership challenge,” said Mrs Maclean.
“This might be an interesting spectacle for Westminster bubble watchers, but I can hear the collective sigh of my constituents wondering what on Earth is going on.
“We will not be forgiven for this act of self-indulgence at a critical moment in our country’s history.
“Tonight, I will be supporting the Prime Minister. I believe wholeheartedly that she has acted in the national interest since the first day she became Prime Minister.
“We need to get on and deliver the Brexit 62% of my constituents voted for. Changing leader now is the wrong thing to do and creates the real risk we end up with no Brexit.”
The vote on Mrs May’s leadership comes after she pulled out of a make or break vote on her EU Brexit deal on Tuesday.
Under the rules of the Conservative Party a vote of no confidence in the leader can be triggered if at least 48 MPs send in letters to the party’s HQ calling for it.
This duly happened and now Mrs May’s future will be decided in a two hour vote from 6pm this evening, Wednesday, December 12.
A majority of MPs, like Mrs Maclean, have said they will back the PM but the ballot is secret and no one knows how much arm twisting and secret meetings will take place.
Even idf she wins the poll if a sizeable number of MPs vote against Mrs May she may yet find her position untenable.
