IN PICTURES- Summer Fun at Astwood Bank Carnival

CROWDS flocked to last weekend’s Astwood Bank Carnival and enjoyed plenty of summer fun in the bright sunshine.

The event – which ran from Friday evening with a barn dance in the Carnival Marquee to Sunday evening – had a ‘Best of British’ theme after last month’s Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The procession took place on the Saturday with carnival royalty leading the parade of floats, bands and walking groups, honouring all things British as it made its way to the showground at Sandhills Farm.

There were stalls and trade stands in the arena with plenty of entertainment on offer, from singers and dancers to karate demonstrations and wrestling.

Other activities included pony rides, crazy golf, circus skills workshops, fairground attractions, a traditional dog show with categories including waggiest tail, cutest pup and best veteran, and falconry displays.

There was a vehicle show featuring a wide range of motors, from vintage vehicles and classic cars to modern motors.

A diverse range of food was on offer from traditional British fare to bhajis, burgers and everything in between while Pimm’s and beer tents were provided by The Why Not Inn.

The organisers were overwhelmed with the response.

Posting on Facebook afterwards they said: “Wow! What a Carnival Weekend that was.

“It felt so amazing to be able to return with the procession this year.

“The floats all looked incredible, so much hard work had gone into them.

“The entertainment, attractions and performers were superb – standing ovation.

“A big thank you to the eclectic array of stalls, crafters, creators and vendors sharing all your amazing products.

“The shimmering and stunning Car Show was packed to all four corners.

“A staggering turnout of visitors, in your droves was amazing to see.

“We cannot thank you all enough.”

A special thank you was also given to all the volunteers for their hard work – both on the day, in the weeks leading up to it and clearing up afterwards – and the sponsors and supporters.

Next year’s Astwood Bank Carnival will take place from July 7 to 9, 2023.
