VISITORS went back 80 years on Saturday and Sunday as Redditch’s Forge Mill Museum enjoyed its biggest 1940s weekend ever.

Ahead of the event and the 80th anniversary of VE Day, people were asked to donate red, white and blue items.

Individuals, groups and schools all duly obliged and the venue was decked out.

VE Day-inspired refreshments were on sale, including Spam and cheese toasties and scones with jam and cream. And there was a special display of photographs, thanks to the Redditch Local History Museum, depicting the original VE Day celebrations in the town and surrounding area from 1945.

Debbie Lakeman, the museum’s learning and access officer, said: “It was definitely our busiest 1940s weekend ever.

“The people really enjoyed seeing the displays and vehicles and got a real feel for what life was like back then.

“They especially loved the live music – The Violets on the Saturday, vintage singer Helen Pearson on the Sunday and Indigo Arts also performed.

“It was a very nostalgic atmosphere on both days and the sun shining down really helped.”
