STARGAZERS across Redditch, Alcester and Studley will be able to witness a pink ‘supermoon’ tonight, Tuesday, April 7, the first full moon of spring.
The astronomical treat will be on offer when the moon rises in the east at 6.55pm until it sets in the west at 6.56am tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.
However the bad news is stargazers will have to wait until 3.35am to see the moon at its fullest and most magnificent.
The pink supermoon coincides with the moment the moon is at closest point to Earth. As a result of being just the 220,000 miles away rather than its further point of 250,000 miles away, the moon will appear 30 per cent brighter and 14 per cent bigger in the sky than normal.
Although called the pink supermoon, it won’t actually appear pink – the name comes from the pink wildflowers which blossom at this time of year in North America – just bit orange when it is low in the sky.
Tonight’s spectacle will be the second of three supermoons this year following last month’s ‘worm’ supermoon and before next month’s ‘flower’ supermoon.
