Inter-generational garden created in Alcester

RESIDENTS from Great Alne Park in Alcester have helped transform an unused piece of land at Heathcote Primary School to create an inter-generational garden.

The project, which residents of Inspired Villages Austin Heath also helped with, is aimed at bridging the communication communication gap between younger and older generations, fostering a safe and collaborative space for them to grow and learn together.

According to a recent survey conducted by Inspired Villages, 51 per cent of adults aged over 65 in the UK feel there is room for improvement in intergenerational communication.

This garden scheme serves as a catalyst for change, offering both generations a unique opportunity to collaborate and create something truly special.

The garden now boasts a variety of features, including cozy seating areas, bug hotels, fruit trees, raised beds, a polytunnel, and fruit and vegetable patches.

Throughout the year, residents and pupils will engage in a range of activities, such as outdoor storytelling sessions, harvesting produce, and baking.

To kick it all off, renowned RHS and former royal gardener, Jim Buttress, joined the communities during National Gardening Week, to officially open the garden.

Jim said: “The intergenerational garden is absolutely superb.

“It provides children with the best classroom in the world – outside, surrounded by plants and with the guidance of residents from Inspired Villages.”

Inspired Villages believes the collaboration exemplifies the power of intergenerational bonds in nurturing mental and emotional wellbeing.
