Intergenerational history project brings Great Alne Village past to life

RESIDENTS at an Alcester retirement community are collaborating with Great Alne Primary School on an intergenerational history project that will see old and young come together to detail the village’s past.

The timeline, brought to life through a series of floor-to-ceiling murals, will showcase key events, landmarks, and notable figures from Great Alne’s history, spanning from Roman times to the present day.

Residents will contribute their own personal knowledge of the land where Great Alne Park now stands, offering unique insights into the area’s past.

To help raise some of the necessary funds, residents of Great Alne Park have organised a series of talks in January 2025, exploring various facets of the village’s history, including the development of the Great Alne Park site.

The talks are free to attend, though donations will be encouraged to support the mural project.

On January 8, Martyn Davey, local historian and editor of Great Alne: A History, will discuss key events and figures from the village’s past and on January 15  Anthony Guter, a Great Alne Park resident, will present a recreated 1925 railway journey from Bearley to Alcester.

Then, on January 22, Doug Badger will share his research on the Maudslay Motor Company.

Adam Hall, village manager at Great Alne Park, said: “We’re proud of the heritage of both the site of our Inspired community and the wider area, so naturally jumped at the chance to get involved.

“Our residents have loved working on this project and it’s a wonderful example of how our community connects with the local area, sharing knowledge and preserving the rich history of Great Alne for future generations.”

The talks are open to both Great Alne Park residents and the wider local community.
