Irish band The Fureys to play their last ever gig at Redditch's Palace Theatre

IRISH band ‘The Fureys’ will play last concert ever in Redditch on April 28.

As part of their Farewell Tour, the group will perform at the Palace Theatre after eight previous appearances there.

The Fureys are one of Ireland’s most influential middle of the road, folk and traditional bands, with classics such as ‘When You Were Sweet 16’, ‘The Green Fields of France’, ‘The Red Rose Cafe’, ‘I Will Love You’, and ‘The Lonesome Boatman’.

Eddie Furey, member of the band, recalls how many musicians had told them they had influenced them after hearing a record from their parents’ or grandparents’ collection.

Changes have occurred over the years – Finbar Furey left the band in 1996, Paul Furey died in June 2002 of illness and Davey Furey had a stroke in 2014.

The remaining members George and Eddie Furey continued releasing CDs and going on tour but in May, the band will call it a day.

Eddie and George say: “Time catches up with us all and we will look forward to a new future from the middle of 2026, playing the odd music session and seeing the younger Furey generation playing their music.”
