WHEN it comes to top office, it’s very much a family affair for the Cargills of Alcester.

For at district level Alcester and Rural Councillor Mark Cargill has recently been named as the new chair of Stratford District Council.

Meanwhile his wife Kathryn, an Alcester town councillor, has just been re-elected as Mayor of the popular market town.

Coun Mark Cargill, who has served at county level in the past and is still an Alcester town councillor, takes over the top district job from Coun Edward Fitter (Con, Quinton).

He’s plays an active and prominent role in Alcester life and latterly has been helping to get the Greig Hall up and running again while his wife Coun Kathryn Cargill is a well-known and respected champion of the town.

During his term of office in Stratford Coun Fitter nominated LifeSpace and Heart of England Forest as his chosen charities, and they will receive a donation of more than £2,500.

Coun Cargill has chosen to highlight the invaluable work of dementia support organisations within the district.

His other charity is the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, following his time as an officer in the Merchant Navy.

“I hope that this coming year will see us all returning to normal with people getting together as they did pre-pandemic,” said Coun Cargill.

“It is difficult to overstate the importance of community events where we can all work together and support each other.

“I look forward to attending as many such events as I can within the district and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations are an excellent start.”

Coun Tony Jefferson continues as leader of the authority with Coun Daren Pemberton remaining as his deputy.

Portfolios have gone to local councillors Ian Shenton, (Wootton Wawen) Environment and Climate Change, and Matt Jennings (Henley in Arden) ICT, Transformation, HR, Tourism and Projects.
