THE Leader of Redditch Borough Council has hit out at people ignoring the strict instructions on preventing the spread of coronavirus.

Councillor Matt Dormer (Con, West) is also a Watch Commander at Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service and said this gave him a good overview of what’s happening in the town.

“I have to tell you I am extremely disappointed with the levels of groups of youths who are breaking the rules and meeting in groups in the various woods and parks around the town,” he said on Facebook.

Councillor Matt Dormer, Leader of Redditch Borough Council.

“This has got to stop.

“I am calling on all of you who are parents to teenagers and young adults that still live with you to please do more to ensure the rules are being followed.

“You, as parents, are accountable in law if your young people break the rules.”

He singled out Oakenshaw Woods, Pitcheroak Woods, Wirehill Woods, Morton Stanley Park, Arrow Valley Lake and the Five Tunnels area where requirements to keeping people safe were being flouted.

Coun Dormer added: “I am also very disappointed at the number of barbecues and bonfires being held.

“I’m angry to hear that ‘a few neighbours’ are being invited to these barbecues and bonfires.

“The UK government has asked you to not have bonfires at this time when people are at home as they can cause a wide range of issues.

“The UK government rules are also clearly against barbecues.

“In your own house with your own household is the only exception.

“If you do not live in the same house then please do not socialise with people from other houses, this is the quickest and easiest way to pass on infection.”

He added: “We are all in this together so we need to start working together and start looking out for one another.

“The Prime Minister has been very clear on his instructions to all of us: Stay home, protect the nhs.uk save lives.

“The vast majority of you are following the rules, but a sizeable number of you are not. Stop it. Stop it now.
