Jobless rate in Redditch is up but six year trend shows decline

THE latest jobless figures for Redditch show that the number claiming benefits increased by 70 over the same period last year to 875, however this figure is still 335 fewer than in 2010.

The figures for nearby Bromsgrove also show an increase, up 40 to 615, still well below the 713 on benefits in 2010.

A spokesman for the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) said the increases could be down to the roll out of Universal Credit and said a number of jobs fairs were planned to find match more people to vacancies.

Local MP Karen Lumley said she welcomed an employment rate which remains at 74.5 per cent, a record high, meaning unemployment has fallen to an eleven-year low.

And wile Redditch has seen a small increase in unemployment claimants this year, the figures represent a drop of 56 per cent since October 2010, meaning Redditch is below the UK average claimant rate.

“While there is plenty of work left to do to ensure that we reduce the number of unemployment claimants, it is clear that over the past six years’ job creation has been a positive story in Redditch.

“Redditch works best when Redditch is working. This is why I am pleased to see record figures which reflect the many positive conversations I have had with businesses and in the Business Leaders initiative.”
