THE Jubilee Centre in Alcester has been officially unveiled as the Eric Payne Community Centre in honour of the late Town and District Councillor.

There at the ceremony was his wife Maggie, who said: “I’m also sure he would be very proud and humbled to be remembered like this.

“Eric still kept his sense of humour and said to me ‘when he left this Earth, for goodness sake don’t let them name a hospital ward after me’.

“I think the new naming is a very fitting tribute.”

Eric Payne died in October 2018 and was Alcester through and through, serving as a town councillor for 20 years, as Mayor twice in 2000 and 2006 plus he had also been the Stratford District Councillor for Alcester since 2007 and was chairman of the Council in 2011.

He was named as Alcester Citizen of the Year in 2017.

The name change was overwhelmingly approved at a full council meeting of Alcester Town Council on November 5 following a huge swell of public support for the tribute.
