REDDITCH MP Karen Lumley visited the Alexandra Hospital on Friday to meet the future of prostate and bladder cancer surgery – the amazing Rory the Robot.
Rory is the unofficial name given to state-of-the-art robotic surgical equipment soon to be arriving at the Alex following a £1.6 million appeal.
Up to 150 radical prostate cancer surgeries a year are performed in Worcestershire, and with Rory’s assistance, patients will benefit from less pain, minimal blood loss, quicker recovery times and reduced complications.
Mrs Lumley was among a number of people, including hospital consultants, the CEO of Morrisons supermarket who have been very supportive of the appeal in Redditch, staff from the Chamber of Commerce, Worcestershire Ambassadors and fundraisers, who were invited along on Friday to a presentation on the project – and were even given the chance to have a go on a life-size prototype of the robot.
“This is a wonderful project to be coming to the Alex, and this was an exciting day for me. To actually see the robot and how it functions was thrilling,” she said.
“I commend the fundraisers and the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust for bringing this project to fruition in Redditch and look forward to being told the first operations are being carried out.”
