A SCHEME to inspire children to become more physically active has marked its first milestone.
Kids Run Redditch celebrated its first birthday at Abbey Stadium on May 18 with 122 young people and their families from across North Worcestershire.
The group, which is run by volunteers, meets every Saturday morning at 9.30am at the Abbey Stadium track.
Children run around the 400m circuit for 20 minutes, logging the laps as they go with the whole family encouraged to join in too. Prizes and certificates are awarded for each milestone and a medal is presented for achieving the marathon distance of 26.2miles.
Organisers say its purpose is to create a more active and healthier Worcestershire by supporting a thriving environment of physical activity and sport.
Volunteer Rosie Pretty, told the Standard: “We want to reach out to as many families as possible and share our love of running and having fun.
“Any age group can join in.
“I take my three-month-old in the pram whilst my two-year-old walks.
“We have mums, dads, carers and grandparents too.
“It’s a great way to get active each week and start the weekend in a healthy way.
“It’s so important for families to have fun and exercise together in the fresh air as it promotes healthy bodies and minds.”
The sessions are free and participants do not have to sign up, just turn up on the day.
