Leaflet error could impact on homeless, fears Redditch mayor

LEAFLETS distributed by police around Redditch on ‘helping the homeless’ left residents confused and borough Mayor Councillor Joe Baker voicing his concern.

The leaflets said that, in the long term, giving to local charities is more helpful to those sleeping on the streets than giving money directly to individuals.

They then directed readers to the local charities ‘listed below’ – only there were none there.

Coun Baker said: “I am aware that lots of Redditch businesses give hot food and drinks to people on the streets in the town and I am concerned that people may now be put off from doing this.

“I fear it could have a detrimental impact on those most in need.”

The Rev Steve Levett, of the Ecumenical Centre, added: “We’re aware that a lot of people have been given these leaflets and of the idea that it’s better giving people a hand up rather than a hand-out.

“However, this is a complex issue, and I find just trying to move them on as a town rather than trying to find a solution questionable.”

The police have confirmed that a reprint of leaflets, including the correct details of local organisations, will soon be circulated.

PC Andy Freeman, from the Abbey Safer Neighbourhood Team in Redditch said: “Redditch, like many other towns, has a number of individuals who sleep rough in doorways and other public areas.

“We engage regularly with them and in many cases are aware of their individual problems and try to help by directing them to charities and other organisations who can give them the support they need.

“We are aware that some members of the public like to help by giving them money, but this is not always the best solution and we would advise these well meaning people to give money to the relevant charities instead.

“We continue to work with local organisations to get the best help for the rough sleepers of Redditch.”
