COMMANDO skills have been on the curriculum for youngsters in Redditch as they enjoyed lessons in adventure and survival.
Armed forces veterans from Commando Joe’s were enlisted to help Year 3 pupils from three Redditch schools – Matchborough First School Academy, Tenacres First School and Moons Moat First School (MTM Alliance)
Over the past year the students have been working to build strength and stay positive under pressure with a series of adrenaline-filled lessons.
Commando Joe’s is a team of veterans from across the armed forces who have retrained to work in schools all over the country offering mentoring and classroom support. Using cargo nets, barrels and a host of other equipment, with tasks including shelter-building and camouflage, the children have been learning about resilience and team building.
To celebrate their achievements a fun day and passing out parade was held last week for participating children from all three schools.
They worked in mixed teams and took on challenges such as problem solving and an inflatable assault course.
At the end of the day all the children were presented with a passing out certificate.
Jackie Harris, Headteacher at Matchborough, said: “During the year the children have enjoyed working in teams and communicating with others, which has helped to build their confidence and self-esteem.
“It was extremely satisfying seeing how the children from the three schools worked co-operatively together. It has been a very positive experience for everyone taking part.”
