Life under lockdown - Lily says it all with poignant lines of poetry

Redditch Editorial 23rd Apr, 2020   0

A POEM penned by a 12-year-old Redditch school pupil has become a social media success story.

Birchensale Middle School student Lily Jones, working from home, wrote the poem as part of her English studies.

“It’s a view of the lockdown from a young person’s view and I think she gets it just right,” said Lily’s aunt Melba Jones.

The Year That Changed Us All

The streets are quiet and empty,

No cars travel along the road.

Hours spent in the home are plenty,

We are all in family mode.

Key workers go to work most days,

To help and do their part.

There are many ways to stop the spread,

But at least it is a start.

The things we take for granted,k

Will never seem the same.

Though this will pass,

We’ll remember who we became.

We finally are as one,

You’ll never walk alone.

Although we can’t be together,

We are all in the same zone.

This will be the year that reminded us,

We can all work as a team.

A lovely smile or a distant wave,

Is more powerful than it seems.

We must pay those respect who respected us,

Who risked their lives for you and me.

To all those who have fallen,

They’ll go down in history.

Although we’re forbidden to meet,

And there is distance between us all,

If we follow the rules and stay at home,

We can break this invisible wall.

‘Thank you’ is thrown around a lot these days,

But from my heart it’s pure and true.

Our generation does have heroes,

And they are all of you!
