Lights on but no one at home - big changes promised for Redditch market

CONCERNS over Redditch’s empty markets stall have been calmed by organisers who promise an influx of traders when it is relaunched in May.

The response comes after one ’embarrassed local resident’ contacted to the Standard voicing fears that the town’s market was going further downhill since it was widely condemned for ‘having the worst German Christmas market’ last year.

Vacant stalls with the bulbs still lit on March 1 set alarm bells ringing with shoppers who expected an overhaul of the area since it was taken over by new operators, Sketts.

However the company re-assured the public that their relaunch during ‘Love Your Local Market’ fortnight will bring in a wealth of new traders inside new pop-up gazebos.

Aby Skett, office manager, said: “We would really like to re-assure people that the stalls that are empty now wont be an issue in the future with these new pop up gazebos.

“We really wanted to ensure we had a smooth transition and we have. These empty stalls were most likely there at the beginning of the week when the market is generally quieter. On the Friday they would usually be full.

“When the gazebos come in empty stalls will not a problem.”

Sketts have promised several new vendors including Indian food, pie traders, and mini jar makers.
