Lime kiln work receives award

VOLUNTEERS from a canal society have received an award for their work restoring Tardebigge’s lime kilns.

Members of the Worcester Birmingham and Droitwich Canals Society were presented with the certificate at Droitwich’s St Richard’s Boat and Car Festival for their tireless work trying to bring the historic spot back to life.

The kilns, which have been formally adopted by the group from the trust, is where quicklime was made more than a hundred years ago.

Based next to the Tardebigge Lock at New Wharf on the Alcester Road, the waterways would have been used to transport the limestone away before proper roads existed.

David Wheeler, chairman of the society, said the project would cost about £100,000 and they were currently working with Worcestershire County Council as well as Avoncroft Museum to generate funding for the work.

“They are the best preserved kilns in Worcestershire and are really interesting site, so it is only right we get them restored.” he said.

“At the moment they are covered in overgrown plants and trees have even grown in them, while some of the brick work is also crumbling away.”

He added the group were currently seeking advice on how to best complete the work and were in talks with experts.

“The kilns are part of North Worcestershire’s history and we hope to restore this to the point where it can be a visitor attraction to many.”
