M5 closures near Bromsgrove in preparation for 'smart' motorway work

Redditch Editorial 8th Mar, 2016 Updated: 18th Oct, 2016   0

ROAD users are advised of overnight lane, carriageway and slip road closures on the M5 between Bromsgrove and Worcester this week as work is carried out to prepare for a major upgrade on the motorway.

The work will be carried out between junctions 4a near Bromsgrove and 7 near Worcester from tonight, Tuesday, (March 8) with closures in place each night finishing 6am Monday, (March 14).

The closures are necessary to prepare for the start of the main ‘smart’ motorway construction between junctions 4a and 6 on the M5 aimed at relieving congestion by converting the hard shoulder to a running lane, and using technology to monitor traffic flow and vary the mandatory speed limits to keep traffic moving smoothly.

The overnight work will involve installing narrow lanes which drivers will use while the construction takes place. Narrow lanes mean three lanes of traffic can be maintained while work goes ahead.

Highways England will also use these closures to remove the remaining overhead signs which will not be required when the smart motorway is in use.

Janice Allen Highways England project lead said: “We are putting these closures in place now to lessen the inconvenience to those using the motorway and those living alongside it. I want to reassure motorists that we are doing all that we can to minimise disruption to journeys and to complete the work timely and efficiently.”

Overnight closures will be from 8pm to 6am each night.

Details of the closures will be clearly signed, as will diversion routes.
