UPDATE: M5 motorway now open between Droitwich and M42 junctions following fatal crash

THE northbound carriageway of the M5 between Junction 5 (Droitwich) and Junction 4A for the M42 is now open following a fatal collision.

The incident involving two lorries and a van happened at around 3.15pm yesterday (Monday) and the road did not re-open until 6am today (Tuesday).

Two ambulances and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene but it quickly became apparent to the paramedics nothing could be done to save the van driver.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the one lorry, a man in his 50s, was assessed at the scene for knee pain and shock but was discharged.

The other lorry driver, a 60-year-old man was assessed at the scene and taken to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital with minor cuts and abrasions.

Chemicals spilling onto the carriageway meant the road needed to be resurfaced before it could be re-opened.
