Matchborough beauty on shortlist for Miss Birmingham crown

A MATCHBOROUGH beauty is hoping all her dreams will come true next month, when she competes for the Miss Birmingham crown.

Amy McDonald heard she had been shortlisted just two weeks ago after beating off competition from more than 800 girls to make the final cut.

“The email confirming my place had gone into my junk mails,” Amy said.

“I was over the moon when I found it.”

As part of her entry, the 24-year-old is fund-raising for the competition’s charity – Beauty With a Purpose – which is at the heart of the Miss World pageant and an important part of Miss Birmingham.

Amy will host a sleep-out on the outskirts of the city centre on February 26, not only to raise funds for the charity but also to bring awareness to the plight so many people face when they become homeless.

“I’m quite apprehensive,” she added.

“But I’m looking forward to doing something that I would never usually experience.

“This way I can have, albeit a very very short one, a personal experience of what it is like to be forced to sleep rough so if I ever speak to youngsters who are homeless I can at least relate in a very limited way.”

The former Arrow Vale student works at Ipseley School and Crown Meadow First and Nursery School, and hopes her experience working with children will help her on her fund-raising journey.

“It has always been a childhood dream of mine to work with children,” she said.

“As part of the Miss England role I would be able to travel to work with disadvantaged children, which has always been a cause close to my heart.”

Amy will compete in the Miss Birmingham final on March 20 at the city’s Macdonald Burlington Hotel.
