May Day set to offer lots of fun for all in Redditch

AS the countdown to May Day begins, volunteers at the Headless Cross Community Orchard are looking forward to a day filled with traditional games, competitions, local food and drink to celebrate the spring.

The May Fayre, held at the Headless Cross Community Orchard, on Bank holiday Monday (May 1) from 11am until 3pm, will feature the Headless Cross Brownies performing the traditional Maypole dance accompanied by Arrow Valley Brass band.

Traditional games, homemade vegan soups, B.B.Q. meat from local producers and cider from Tardebigge and Headless Cross and J P brews will all be on offer and guests can browse the many stalls selling locally produced goods and peruse the many community group stands.

There will be a plant share stall for anyone who fancies swapping their sweet peas for a sunflower too – simply bring along your surplus and take away a treasure.

Scarecrows are wanted to enter the annual May Fayre Scarecrow Competition and the Orchard team are appealing for people having a spring clean to transform their unwanted garments into a prize winning scarecrow as part of the May Fayre celebrations.

Elsewhere Bodger, Richard Weaver, will be giving a Pole lathe demonstration showing traditional wood working skills and there will be new orchard art, by this year’s artist in residence Liz Jennings, to be unveiled by the Mayor. The Human Fruit Machine is also set to make its return.

Orchard volunteer Neil Marsh said: “This looks set to be the best May Fayre event so far, come along for a great day out for young and old alike.”
