Medals galore as Redditch athletes triumph at Anniversary Games

A TEAM of athletes from Redditch are celebrating after winning a clutch of medals at the Special Olympics GB 40th Anniversary Games in Stirling.

It was a triple celebration for the local squad as athlete Richard Daykin was awarded Special Olympics Legend status, in this the 30th anniversary of Special Olympics Redditch.

“It was brilliant – everyone enjoyed it and the athletes continue to amaze and inspire us with their commitment and determination to excel,” said Elaine Daykin, Richard’s mum, who started Special Olympics Redditch 30 years ago when she discovered there were no sports clubs or after school organisations for intellectually disabled youngsters in the town.

Richard’s ‘Legend’ status came in recognition of his 30 years of competing at the top, and he proudly joined a parade of those similarly honoured as the Games opened.

The Redditch squad competed as part of a West Midlands Region team at the four day event which attracted 1,200 competitors from across the country.

“We did eight athletic events and one for the paralympic sport of boccia and we came home with loads of medals,” said Elaine.

One Redditch athlete, Paul Griffiths, was competing at national level for the first time and won gold and silver while overall the team brought back eight golds, seven silvers, and four bronze medals.

Elaine’s husband Ron paid tribute to the army of volunteers who help make it all happen for the Special Olympics movement.

“For us the Games were the icing on the cake and recognition for all the work that goes on behind the scenes,” he said.

“We have always been reliant on volunteers and although Elaine started things in Redditch she couldn’t have continued without the help of others.

“There is nothing else that I know that matches it as something to provide some sort of pastime or sport for those who cannot access the same opportunities as everyone else.”
