CLOSE to 150 competitors from across the UK took part in the Special Olympics Redditch swimming gala last Saturday in what proved to be a lively and hotly contested event.
Watched by friends, family, SOR patron Karen Lumley MP, borough Mayor Councillor Pattie Hill and council leader Coun Bill Hartnett six swimmers from Redditch battled their way onto the medal table.
Shane Dennis collected a silver and bronze, Matthew Page a gold and bronze, Richard Daykin a gold and silver, Lauren Francis a silver, Bethany Coleman two bronze and Jonathan Wedgbury a gold.
In addition Wedgbury, Dennis, Page and Daykin won bronze in the 4×25-metre team medley relay.
Delighted organiser Ron Daykin said: “This was our fourth gala and it went very well indeed and the feedback we’ve received from the teams, some of whom had travelled a considerable distance was very positive.
“The atmosphere was great and the swimmers really enjoyed themselves.”
