Memorial match raises over £2,000 for charity

Ryan Smith 3rd Aug, 2022

THE CHARITY match in memory of Redditch footballer Tom Rankin has raised more than £2,550 for The Kaleidoscope Plus Group.

The donations will go towards helping people across the UK who are suffering with their mental health and the club will be working on events throughout the season to raise even more cash for the charity.

Sunday’s memorial game saw a Tom Rankin XI take on a Loughborough XI at the Trico Stadium, with the game finishing 3-3.

Bob Rankin, Tom’s dad, got the match underway following a minute of applause.

Loughborough was chosen as the opposition for the match as Tom had graduated from the university.

Tom died aged 26 back in March just a day after playing for Redditch United in a league match.

Redditch United confirmed it would not be using the number eight as a squad number this season as a tribute to former player Tom, as he had worn that number last year.

The club’s chairman David Faulkner said: “It’s been a very tough few months for the family, members of the football fraternity and the wider community.

“Tom’s passing is still very raw and unfortunately, we have all been left with many questions we may never have answers to.

“One thing that I know has helped me and the people that I have spoken to is to keep getting together.

“Sunday’s game saw people travel from far and wide and as much as it was for Tom, we were all there for each other too.

“A huge thank you to all of those who attended and donated. A special mention should also be given to Tom’s family and Shay Brennan from Loughborough University for coordinating the day.”

Tom was Redditch United’s former captain and also played for Bromsgrove Sporting and Leamington and there were representatives from all three clubs at the match.
