THE MOONS Moat Conservation Group is holding a free event to celebrate the work the done on the area over the last 25 years.
Starting at 10.30am on Saturday June 13, at the Arley Road site, the group will be unveiling the newly installed Moons Moat Nature Trail, the erection of two interpretation boards and the cultivation of the Wildflower Meadow.
Moons Moat is one of the oldest, and most historic sites in Redditch. Originally built in the 14th century it was abandoned in the late 17th century and left to be overtaken by its natural surroundings.
With the coming of the New Town, Moons Moat was recognised as a site of significant historic interest and was scheduled as an ancient monument, giving it a level of protection similar to that of Stone Henge.
However, with residential properties surrounding it has become one of Redditch’s ‘hidden gems’.
For over 25 years, volunteers of the Moons Moat Conservation Group, have worked to restore, maintain, develop and promote the site so that today it provides a calm and attractive community asset.
The group has cleaned and restored the site, trimmed hedges and trees, maintained the pathways and have campaigned for better signage. As a result, visitors can see the moat and understand the 700 year story of what remains visible today.
