MORE than a quarter of 10-year-olds in nearby Birmingham are now ‘clinically obese’ according to new figures released by the University of Birmingham.
In addition 40 per cent are overweight on leaving primary school.
Researchers say obesity rates in the UK are the highest in Europe and have increased dramatically over the past few years to such an extent that more than 20 per cent of the population are now obese with the condition costing the UK economy in excess of £3 billion per year.
In Birmingham, more than 25 per cent of the population are obese – the third highest rate in the UK.
