REDDITCH MP Rachel Maclean has thrown her weight behind the Prime Minister’s Brexit white paper.
The proposals, hammered out at Theresa May’s country retreat Chequers last weekend, envisage a ‘free trade area’ with the EU but with Britain outside the Single Market and Customs Union.
“We are the ones in government and we are where we are – it’s very tempting for people to say they don’t really like this plan, but what would they like instead? Failure to support it could lead to a General Election which could very likely usher in a Labour government and then we would not have any kind of Brexit,” said Mrs Maclean.
“Of course there are people in our party who have strong anti-Europe views; these people have always held those views and it’s no surprise that there’s a big division in our party.
“It’s a question of do we get behind this plan or do we continue to tear ourselves apart.
“We now need to go to the EU because this position is only the opening gambit and if necessary we have to be prepared to walk away.”
