MP sacking, foodbanks and letters to Santa - This weeks Redditch Standard letters

THIS weeks letters to the editor.

‘Writing on the wall’

SO EVEN our Prime Minister thinks Redditch’s MP, Rachel Maclean, is not up to the job.

At least he has the luxury of being able to sack her. The good citizens of Redditch may have to wait another year for their opportunity.

Since being elected, Mrs Maclean has simply followed the Tory pack, only jumping ship from Boris Johnson’s government at the last minute, so she could secure a ministerial job in Liz Truss’ and then Rishi Sunak’s government.

The writing is on the wall for this government, which has presided over one scandal after another.

At least the constituents of Mid-Bedfordshire, Tamworth, Selby and a few others have had the opportunity to choose a better MP.

Please Mrs Maclean, don’t wait until you’re pushed out of office, go now and give us the opportunity of electing someone who actually wants to represent this town properly.

John Kane

‘Hope she will continue to serve the community’

IT IS ridiculous to remove Rachel Maclean from her role a day before she was expected to introduce the Renters Reform Bill to committee.

Whatever your opinion of her as an MP or member of the cabinet, how can anyone be expected to do their job properly when they’re not in it long enough to make any change.

I agree with her statement, you would hope that she is disappointed with asking to be removed.

The BBC and other news outlets acting surprised that she was the only MP that was bothered is laughable.

I would argue that any MP that is happy to be without a role isn’t deserving of being elected.

Let’s hope that she will look upon this as a chance to put all of her effort into achieving the what she set out to do after the 2019 election and serving the people of Redditch.

‘Help support people with canacer’

EACH year in the UK around 10,500 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer – devastating news that also affects many thousands more of their family members and friends.

In this distressing time people are often unsure where to turn for support and are left feeling isolated.

Pancreatic cancer UK’s Support Line specialist nurses, like myself and my colleagues, provide expert information and support for you.

We are here to provide you and your family with practical steps and emotional support when you need it most.

I also need to ask people living with pancreatic cancer and their loved ones to help us as we research how our support services can reach even more people.

We particularly want to hear from those who have never been in contact with the charity before to understand where we can make a difference.

There are two ways to contribute – either by taking a short survey or through a one-to-one interview.

Your views will be invaluable and help us continue to be there for thousands of families for years to come.

Please email: [email protected] to take part.

Anyone affected by pancreatic cancer can call our Specialist Nurses for support and information on our confidential, free Support Line on (Freecall: 0808 801 0707).

‘Do your bit this Christmas’

WITH Christmas around the corner, can I ask everyone to dig deep and donate to their local foodbank?

I know it is a tough time for everyone, but even a few canned items can help massively.

There are several foodbanks in the borough that you can donate to, and even a pet foodbank.

Christmas is a time for giving, and instead of wasting money on Christmas crackers, and wasteful items, spend it on helping out a someone who needs it.

‘Get your letter to Santa’

IT IS nearly that time of year again when Santa Claus and his elves at the North Pole are busy getting ready to spread festive joy to all children.

As always, Santa is expecting to receive millions of letters from children around the world with endless lists of what they’d like to receive in their stockings when the big day arrives.

To ensure children living with a vision impairment in the UK get a reply from jolly old Saint Nicholas, he’s once again teamed up with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) to make his letters available in accessible formats, including audio and large print.

Last year, the elves sent more than 2,700 letters from Santa to children with a vision impairment across the UK, helping them experience the same magic of Christmas as sighted children.

If you know a child who has a vision impairment who would love to receive a letter from Santa in braille, large print or audio, please send their Christmas letter to: Santa Claus, RNIB, Northminster House, Northminster, Peterborough, PE1 1YN.

Postal letters and website requests need to be sent by Friday, December 1.

Santa can also receive letters through his email address on [email protected] by December 19.

Editors comment

IT WAS fantastic to see so many great turn-outs in our towns and villages to the Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day commemorations at the weekend.

Despite the heavy rain and high winds, people came out to pay their respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice over the years.

All the events were so poignant – not least because of the current conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

We must always remember, never forget and learn from past mistakes.

We welcome your letters…..
