MP takes Redditch Town of Culture bid to Parliament

MP Chris Bloore has thrown his support behind Redditch’s bid to become a future UK Town of Culture, taking the campaign to the floor of the House of Commons and highlighting the town’s rich heritage and cultural strengths.

Speaking during Business-of-the-House questions, Mr Bloore showcased Redditch’s unique history and cultural contributions, making the case for why the town is a strong contender for the prestigious national title.

The MP said to Leader of the House Sir Alan Campbell: “It will not surprise him that Redditch has launched its own Town of Culture bid, especially given that it is the home of Royal Enfield and Bordesley Abbey and the birthplace of John Bonham, from Led Zeppelin, and Grammy-award winner Harry Styles.

“I know the Leader of the House has to stay neutral in this process but if he cannot join me for a gluten-free toastie at the Boathouse café on Arrow Valley Lake, will he join me in wishing Redditch all the best in its bid?”

The MP also joked about the Leader of the House’s regret at missing last year’s Christmas lights switch-on in Redditch, using the moment to extend an open invitation to visit the town in future.

In response, the Leader of the House acknowledged the invitation and expressed his support for communities bidding for Town of Culture status, noting he would consider a future visit and wishing all bids well, including Redditch’s.

Mr Bloore said raising the bid in parliament was about putting Redditch on the national map and building momentum behind a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the town.

He said: “Redditch has an incredible story to tell – from our industrial heritage and green spaces to our music, arts and community festivals.

“This bid is about celebrating who  we are, boosting pride and bringing new investment, tourism and opportunities for young people into our community.”

He added that Town of Culture status would provide a major boost for local pride and the economy, helping to showcase Redditch’s talents on a national stage.

If Redditch were to become the UK Town of Culture for 2028, it would mean a government investment of £3million to deliver a year-long festival of culture with national and international profile.

Three towns will be shortlisted as finalists for the designation of Town of Culture 2028 – one each of small, medium and large towns. Due to the population of Redditch, the town would fall into the large category.

Two runners-up will each be awarded £250,000 to support cultural activity.
