MP to meet Health Secretary over Alex Hospital crisis

REDDITCH MP Karen Lumley is to meet with Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt, to discuss the crisis at the Alex tomorrow, Friday.

The MP had been sent a briefing paper from Redditch and Bromsgrove Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and was due to have a conference call with its chairman Dr Jonathan Wells together with Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid and Nadhim Zawahi, MP for Stratford.

“If what the doctors are saying is correct and that this service is not safe then as a mother I am never going to recommend it to other mothers,” said Mrs Lumley, who is a parliamentary private secretary in the Department of Health.

“And if the CCG is recommending that we do not go ahead with the proposal then in that case that is the end of it as they are the commissioning body.”

However she said that the county needed two accident and emergency departments to cope with patient demand and that Worcester on its own would be unable to cope.

As it stands the action by Redditch and Bromsgrove doctors touches on the very existence of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Insiders and Save the Alex have already hinted that it might have to look south towards Gloucester, to find the capacity it needs if Redditch and Bromsgrove starts to commission its services from other providers, for example in Birmingham.
