THE proposed new South Warwickshire Council has set a target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2025 – within a year of its first elections.

It also wants to see services provided through its contractors to include carbon reduction targets to deliver net zero by 2030.

Local residents will have to play their part too.

A further ambition is to reduce net carbon emissions from across South Warwickshire by a minimum of 55 per cent by 2030 plans on how to further reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050.

And that’s not all, planning for the future the new authority has also set a target called ‘Adaptation 2050’ – by 2050 enabling the local our environment and communities to have adapted to the potential of at least a three degrees rise in global temperatures by 2100.

The ambitious plans are all part of a joint action programme agreed between Warwick District Council and Stratford District Council.

Councillor Ian Shenton, Stratford district’s climate change portfolio holder, said: “There are many actions underneath our ambitions, but there are also many simple things we can all do to play our part.

“Don’t leave the tap running when you brush your teeth, recycle as much as you can – there is still a lot of waste going into the wrong bins.

“If you are able, use the car less, buy loose vegetables and fruit, reduce meat consumption by a little and don’t waste food.

“These may be small things but collectively they mount up and as far as waste goes the less that goes to landfill causing greenhouse gas, such as methane which is up to 30 times worse than CO2 emissions, the better.
