EFFORTS to sort out the term time parking chaos outside Redditch schools are being stepped up.
A high level cross-party working group set up by the borough council has come up with a series of recommendations.
These include Traffic Regulation Orders on zigzag lines outside all schools, starting with the top five schools complained about, schools like Oak Hills First School and Webheath Primary.
If these are implemented, recruiting an extra enforcement officer to patrol them, and increased partnership working between the borough council, local police and schools.
The call follows a survey which found more than 20 per cent of daily complaints to councillors involved parking problems.
These have ranged from parents double parking and blocking roads and driveways, parking on pavements, driving over traffic cones, driving the wrong way down cycle lanes and putting children and residents at risk.
Councillor Mark Shurmer (Lab, Lodge Park) who chaired the group said: “Other approaches have been tried – for instance Bromsgrove brought in a private company and they were a bit draconian and there were lots of complaints.
“The parents are the important part, and it’s only a small minority who are causing the problem.
“We’re hoping through partnership working their behaviour can be changed.”
The working party’s report goes before the council’s executive committee next week.
