A HUGE new mural inspired by the town’s 57/58 bus route and designed in the Redditch Colour Palette has been unveiled at a special celebration day.
‘Jump on Board: Stories and Dreams of our 57/58 Bus Route’ created at the town’s bus station was a Community Makers commission from Reimagine Redditch, co-created by artist Thomas Cross and the people of Redditch.
The massive, 6m wide public artwork was designed through a series of creative workshops exploring what Redditch means to these communities.
The new art was celebrated at an opening ceremony on March 8.
Hundreds of people enjoyed creative family activities in Kingfisher Centre, where the ‘Thought Baubles’ artworks, which influenced the design of the final mural, and the stories behind them, were also on display.
The Jump on Board project is led by Bound Together CIC, working with Diamond Bus, and is just one of Reimagine Redditch’s five Community Makers commissions.
Richard Bromhall, Reimagine Redditch’s programme director, said:”Our Community Makers commissions bring together Redditch artists and community organisations to co-create the art they want, where they want it.
“With the help of Diamond Bus, you can ‘jump on board’ to see the new mural at Redditch Bus Station.”
Alison Osborne, Bound Together CIC director said Jump on Board had been an amazing collaboration within the Redditch community.
“I am really excited to see if people can spot their story in the wonderful mural they created with Thomas Cross.”
She thanked the Redditch community for choosing the commission idea and everyone who ‘jumped on board’ at the celebration day.
Thomas, a talented visual storyteller who specialises in co-created community projects, said: “It’s been exciting and inspiring to collaborate with the people of Redditch on the theme ‘Journeys of Home’.
“We have created a unique artwork which I hope will inspire more creative journeys for everybody across Redditch.”
Kevin Collins, Diamond Bus Redditch operations manager, added the operator was proud to have worked with Bound Together CIC and Reimagine Redditch to celebrate the communities served by the 57/58 bus.
“The route has been part of the Diamond Redditch Network for many years and provides a key link connecting these local communities together.”
