A REDDITCH community group is celebrating the completion of a new 80-metre mural.
Church Hill Big Local have worked with professional artist Andrew ’Title’ Mills and Redditch Borough Council to create a design showcasing the local community and environment.
The mural is titled ‘Our Community’, and is installed in an underpass beneath the Coventry Highway, linking Church Hill and Arrow Valley Park.
It forms part of Church Hill Big Local’s legacy as the group transitions from being part of Local Trust’s national Big Local programme to become an independent registered charity.
The design includes local landmarks Bomford Hill Park, Moons Moat and Arrow Valley Lake, alongside activities such as dog walking, cycling and parkrun.
Community memories are recorded with Positivity Rocks, a line of approximately 7,000 stones that lifted people’s spirits during the first pandemic lockdown, and The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Portsmouth, who visited Church Hill as part of last year’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Church Hill Big Local co-chair Hayley Price said: “We’re really proud of what Church Hill Big Local has achieved over the last 10 years, and wanted to celebrate that alongside recognising the many other wonderful groups and assets in our community.
“We ran a consultation to see what people would like included, and Andrew’s fantastic design has captured so many different elements. We’ve had a huge amount of positive feedback already, and look forward to this artwork bringing smiles to people’s faces for years to come.”
Redditch Borough Council supported the project as part of the Roadway Arts initiative, which uses artwork inspired by the local community to help make underpasses and bus shelters places that people enjoy using, feel safe, and stay connected.
Huw Moseley, Arts Development Officer for Redditch Borough Council, said: “It’s always a pleasure to support local groups who have great ideas for using the arts to enrich our community.
“This was an ambitious project that took many months of planning, and has delivered a superb visual artwork that we are delighted to add to the council’s Roadway Arts portfolio.”
