New project launched in Redditch aims to get us all close to nature

Redditch Editorial 6th Oct, 2023   0

AN EXCITING new nature project which will see residents across the borough help create and improve wildlife habitats in their neighbourhoods will be officially launched on Saturday.

Nextdoor Nature, led by Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, supports community-led action for nature and offers local people the chance to get involved.

Saturday’s Apple Day in Headless Cross will be the first opportunity to find out more about Nextdoor Nature and discover how to get involved.

Project officer Yasmina Ashcroft will be listening to people’s views and encouraging residents to sign-up to help practically to help bring about positive change for communities and nature across Redditch.

Yasmina said, “We’re all too aware of the wide-scale losses of wildlife in this country – a recent report has found one in six species is at risk of extinction in the UK, for example.

“Perhaps what we’re less aware of is the increasing gap between ourselves and the natural world.

“But by communities taking practical action, we’ve got the power to bring about positive change – for ourselves, for our community and for nature.”

“What that change looks like is up to individual residents and we can help to develop and support ideas or skills.

Whether you want to build bird boxes, plant trees or grow veggies, there are people living nearby who want to help and can show you how.”

The Apple Day runs from 11am to 3pm on Saturday, October 7, at Headless Cross Community Orchard, off Birchfield Road.

Yasmina will be available to chat to attendees about wildlife and how people can help.
