New surgical theatres coming to the Alex

Redditch Editorial 19th Sep, 2023   0

REDDITCH Borough Council planning committee have approved the proposal of two new surgical theatres at the Alexandra Hospital.

The theatres will be used for elective surgeries, and it is estimated that there will be over 900 operations a month in the new suites.

Planning committee members unanimously voted for the proposals.

Dr Julian Berlet, Anaesthetic Consultant at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals spoke at the meeting in favour of the plans.

He said: “The surgical theatres at the Alex were built in the 1980’s.

“And while they have been maintained, they are built to a specification that has moved on.

“The new theatres will increase capacity by 28 per cent, and this development will help ease the load for the county.”

The majority of the new accommodation is at ground floor level which includes two new operating theatres with associated accommodation including recovery areas, offices and staff facilities.

The plans will also include new parking facilities and 11 extra parking bays.
