Newly elected Redditch MP defends claims over ‘deleted Facebook comments’

Redditch Editorial 16th Jun, 2017   0

NEWLY elected Redditch MP has given a robust response following anger that some comments and questions directed at her Facebook page during the election campaign had been deleted.

She said during the campaign, which all the candidates agreed had been fought in a fair manner, she had nevertheless received quite a lot of abusive through the online forum while some things were printed that were ‘just plain wrong’.

“There was quite a lot of misinformation posted and stuff that was simply untrue.

“Throughout the election I made it very clear that we were fighting a clean campaign but unfortunately there were one or two members of the public who were using it as a platform to attack me as a candidate,” she said.

She added that a ‘profanity filter’ had also been in place which meant some comments were screened out by Facebook.

On some issues she said that answers needed a fuller reply than was possible online.

“One of the things complained about was that I was not responding to people but I wasn’t always instantly able to reply and we were pointing out that there were other ways to get in touch with me.

“I can now say that I have responded personally to absolutely everyone who contacted me during the election campaign.”

Mrs Maclean added that since the election her Facebook page was now open for everyone and anyone to comment on, although the filters would stay in place.

“I want to make it very clear – I have been elected to serve everyone in this constituency even if they have different views from me – we are open to all debate.”
