REDDITCH residents are being reminded that on June 1 Birmingham City Council is launching its Clean Air Zone in a bid to tackle air pollution in the Second City.
Owners of high polluting vehicles – approximately one in four – will need to pay a daily charge to travel within the A4540 Middleway Ring Road, but not along the Middleway itself.
Recent research has found that visits to family doctors for children with asthma problems surge in a week of raised air pollution with the number of inhalers prescribed increasing too.
Drivers can input their vehicle registration number on the Government vehicle checker to check if they will be charged to enter the Clean Air Zone. Charges will be £8 per day for cars/LGVs (small vans) and £50 per day for coaches/HGVs.
The zone will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and the charging period is midnight-midnight – not 24 hours from entering the zone.
Signs will be installed around the boundary warning drivers they are approaching the zone.
Once they enter, ANPR cameras will detect the vehicles and determine if they are subject to charges.
Drivers will not be notified they have entered the zone via text, email or letter, the onus will be on the driver to know they have entered the zone and arrange payment within the allocated time frame.
