Nominated neighbour scheme to keep vulnerable Redditch residents safe

Redditch Editorial 28th Sep, 2017   0

COLD callers are being given the cold shoulder thanks to new neighbourhood scheme in Redditch.

The Nominated Neighbour Scheme is launched across Redditch next month and aims to prevent and deter rogue traders and doorstep crime.

The scheme has been designed tto protect vulnerable and elderly residents who are often targeted by this sort of crime.

The scheme involves any cold callers being directed to a nominated, trusted neighbour who will check the identity of the caller and return to the neighbour’s address with them if they are a genuine caller.

It has a two pronged approach as callers who are not genuine will not want their details checked and confirmed and so may leave the property without hassle. It is hoped in turn this will deter cold calling in the first instance, especially if it becomes known the scheme is in place.

The campaign has been funded by North Worcestershire Community Safety Partnership using funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner and has been developed by Redditch Borough Council’s community safety team.

Councillor Joe Baker, whose portfolio covers community safety, said: “This sort of crime can devastate the victims who are often too frightened or intimidated to report it.

“As a community it is our responsibility to protect these residents and help deter cold callers or similar distressing situations.

“The scheme will assist in reducing this type of offence making Redditch a safer place for everyone, especially our most vulnerable residents.”
